Sligo Kayak Tours
Smaller groups leave fewer footprints…..A couple of months ago, Barry Mottershead, set up the brand new Sligo Kayak Tours. Barry guides kayak tours on a daily basis of Lough Gill, Ballisodare Bay and the Seal Colony, Mullaghmore and ClassieBawn. With a deep passion for adventure, Barry already spends most of his time on the water with surfing and kayaking. So, it was only inevitable that he would end up working there. I had been so looking forward to getting out on the water with him when I heard of his new venture.
We kicked off our May Bank Holiday weekend with a Friday afternoon Kayak. Barry took a group of us out on the water, meeting at Dorley Park after lunchtime. Once we had our briefing, we suited up and hopped into our Kayaks.
It’s been about ten years since I operated a Kayak, so I was a bit wobbly in the beginning! After spending my first few minutes wandering into the rushes, floating sideways, backwards and in the complete wrong direction to everyone else, Barry sidled up to me and gave me awesome tips on how to operate my oar to benefit the whole experience. He’s a brilliant teacher and a skill I admire in him. His natural chilled out personality comes across so nicely in the session which instills a total sense of calm in you, the student. When you can feel yourself gliding along the lakes with the wind in your hair and the splash of the water at your side. You know, you got this!
We pulled up to Beezies Island for a bite to eat and a little exploration. So many sheep! Barry, the nifty ranger, packs a table and gorgeous teas and coffees along with him in his kayak. The Beezies Barista even packs his own milk frother! I offered to pack along super healthy salads for the gang and it went down a treat. We all sat on the shore of Beezies chomping down and taking in the island vibes. Barry’s office is pretty idyllic!
If you have an afternoon or even a full day, drop Barry a line and head out on the water with him. I’m already planning my next session!
